Dr Lap Yan Chan (Eric)

In 2020, Eric earned a double master’s degree (dual award) in Automotive Engineering, offered by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the Technical University of Ingolstadt, graduated with distinction. He participated in projects related to computer vision and pattern recognition, achieving notable results, which were published at an IEEE conference and recognized as state-of-the-art.

From 2020 to 2023, he worked as a PhD researcher at the Technical University of Chemnitz on the IFAS project (Project code: FKZ 19A19009E). He developed a prototype system to monitor vehicle occupants’ vital signs and body posture inside the vehicle compartment using mmWave radars, cameras, ToF lidar, and machine learning. The system employs a novel algorithm to detect the breathing signal and estimate the driver’s chest position within a remarkably short time window of three seconds. Industry partners such as Continental AG and Indie Semiconductor were impressed with the results, and the system is being further developed.

Since 2020, Eric has hosted several workshops for educators, parents and children on topics related to AI and education. He offers unique insights into how educational methods should be designed to help children excel in the AI age. He integrates Brain-Based principles and approaches in the design and delivery of his projects and will soon become a certified Brain-Based Educator.
